Tim Keller gives an antidote for pride and anger in his sermon series on the Book of James. Tell your self this truth: “I am a perfectly loved moral failure!”.
I love this advice. I am defensive, angry, self-protective, and prone to bitterness if someone attacks my spotless view of myself. (I am personalizing Keller’s message.) The only solution is to see myself clearly as a dismal sinner and to remember that Christ loves me and accepts me and washes me clean of that moral failure. If I meditate on what Christ has already done for me I become peaceful and joyful. I do not react in anger when I hear hard truths about myself because Christ met me in those failures and is accomplishing a grand redemption.
